The Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016 by the World Economic Forum assesses the competitiveness landscape of 140 economies, providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity. The Report series remains the most comprehensive assessment of national competitiveness worldwide.

The most competitive economy in Africa is Mauritius. Worldwide Mauritius ranks 46. That makes Mauritius more competitive than countries like Turkey (51), Vietnam (56) and Mexico (57). As most competivite African economy Mauritius is followed by South Africa, Rwanda, Botswana, Morocco. Striking is the low position of Africa's giant Nigeria. Only 24th in Africa and 124th worldwide...

Conoil Posts N359.41million Profits for First Half 2015

Indigenous oil company, Conoil Nigeria plc has posted N359.41 million profit in the first six months of 2015 even as fuel marketers in Africa’s largest economy continue to struggle with unpaid government debts.

Conoil finance costs surged 116.16 per cent to N1.90 billion in June 2015 as against N882.36 million.

Nigeria to Generate N33billion Annually from Digital Switchover

The Director General of National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Emeka Mba has stated that the federal government can generate as much as N330 billion annually from digital broadcasting.

The NBC Boss said this is possible if the country can achieve the new date of June 20, 2017 for the country’s Digital Switchover (DSO).

Arik Air, Nigeria and West Africa’s largest carrier, is resuming flight services to Monrovia, Liberia from October 5, 2015.

Flights to Monrovia were suspended in July 2014 in the wake of the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in some West African countries.

Following the Central Bank of Nigeria's guidelines on commercial paper issuance in Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, yesterday, established a N100 billion Commercial Paper ("CP") Programme.

This represents the largest commercial paper programme to be established in Nigeria by a (non-financial institution) corporate issuer since the 2009 guidelines on commercial paper from the CBN.

Dangote to Inaugurate Tanzanian Cement Plant Oct 10

Africa’s foremost cement manufacturer, Dangote Cement, said on Monday that it is set to commission its new 3.0 million metric tonnes per annum cement plant located in Mtwara District of Tanzania on October 10.

The company said in a statement that it will also hold the grounding breaking ceremony for 25 hectares of Jetty land at Mgao village in Mtwara District the same day.

NNPC secures $1.2 billion financing for Chevron JV oil wells

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has secured a USD1.2 billion multi-year drilling financing package for 36 oil wells under the NNPC and Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture (JV), a statement by Mr. Ohi Alegbe, NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, in Abuja revealed.

Alegbe stated that the NNPC and Chevron JV deal was executed at a signing ceremony in London.

SA Firm, Nampak, to set up Glass-Bottle Plants in Nigeria

South Africa’s Nampak Ltd. has agreed with partners to build glass-bottle manufacturing plants in Nigeria and Ethiopia to take advantage of growing demand for packaged consumer goods and bottled drinks in Africa’s most populous nations.

The Johannesburg-based company has reached a preliminary agreement with a partner for a factory in Ethiopia and is now seeking financing for a project with a potential cost of $68 million, Chief Executive Officer Andre de Ruyter said.

MTN Nigeria partners LAPO for retailer loans

LAPO Microfinance Bank said that it entered into a partnership with MTN Nigeria with a view to meeting its commitment to the Central Bank of Nigeria Micro Small and Medium Enterprise Fund (MSMEDF). This resulted in the initiative 'MTN BizGrow', a SME credit product designed to meet the funding needs of MTN retailers.

The partnership will enable the operator's retailers to access credit by leveraging the small and medium enterprise development initiative of the CBN, the Vanguard reported.
